New Year’s Resolution part III

Make yourself answerable to someone. This can be a friend or relative or even blog readers. I know that when I have to report to someone my blood glucose readings I am much better at watching what I eat and I exercise more then when I do not have to report. Being accountable really works. You have to make the commitment to do it regularly – usually once a week is perfect and you have to make a the promise to yourself that you will be honest – even when the results are bad – we often learn more from our failures than our successes so do not feel bad about reporting less than stellar results but to be honest about why you think the week did not go so well and what you can do in the future to avoid going off the rails.

Also build in a reward system for yourself for when you are successful. I like writing down various rewards and putting them in a jar and randomly pulling one out. You may prefer knowing what your reward is in advance. You could even get the person to whom you report to, to award you a prize as other people are often more generous towards us than we are to ourselves. Obviously make the rewards in keeping with the goal – a chocolate bar may not be the smartest reward for successful dieting – though I do believe in having moderate cheat days when trying to lose weight – just don’t go crazy and eat everything in sight!

I have started a yahoo group to support all those who want to be successful with their resolutions in 2010. Join at http://groups.yahoo.com/group
